Why are the two kunds sacred?
According to Vaishnava tradition, the ponds are connected with Krishna's encounter with the bull demon Arishtasura. In the devotional telling, Krishna manifests Shyam Kund and Radha, with the gopis, creates Radha Kund. These are religious narratives, not historical claims about how the ponds were physically formed. The stories illuminate the bond between Radha and Krishna and the meaning of sacred water in Braj worship.
Although the kunds are neighbours, pilgrims treat each one respectfully as its own sacred space. Quiet chanting, folded hands and listening to a knowledgeable local guide are appropriate ways to experience the area.
The midnight bathing tradition: a different festival day
A famous midnight observance at Radha Kund is linked to Ahoi Ashtami / Bahulashtami, rather than to Govardhan Puja itself. In 2026, the Mathura-area Radha Kund Snan is listed for Sunday, 1 November, with a late-night ritual window extending past midnight. This distinction matters when planning a November trip: a visitor arriving only for Govardhan Puja on 10 November should not expect the Ahoi Ashtami midnight gathering on that date.
Participation in ritual bathing is a personal religious choice. Crowded steps, unknown water depth and changing water quality can create serious risks. Observe local guidance, avoid entering the water if conditions are unsafe, and keep soap, shampoo and litter out of sacred ponds.

A mindful visit along the parikrama
Allow time to move slowly through the adjoining lanes. Remove footwear where required, avoid obstructing narrow steps, and request permission before taking close-up photographs of worshippers. If the area is crowded, enjoy darshan from a clear, safe position instead of pressing toward the water's edge.
Continue the Braj story
Nearby Kusum Sarovar and the wider Govardhan route offer other places to reflect on Krishna's leelas. Consider visiting the kunds as part of a day devoted to understanding the landscape, rather than treating them as a quick photo stop. The annual festival date, local restrictions and any bathing arrangements should be verified before travelling.
