Choose transport by the last mile
| Option | Usually useful for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Train to Mathura Junction | Reaching the region from larger cities | Plan a separate transfer to Vrindavan or Govardhan |
| Pre-arranged car or taxi | Intercity transfers and travelling with luggage | Vehicles may stop well outside temple zones |
| E-rickshaw | Short city and temple-area hops where allowed | Routes may be diverted; agree on the fare first |
| Shared auto | Short connections between common local points | Crowding, route changes and limited luggage space |
| Walking | Final temple approaches and parikrama paths | Distances feel longer in heat or crowds |
Separate your travel into three legs
First, reach Mathura. Next, decide whether you are staying in Mathura, Vrindavan or Govardhan. Finally, plan the pedestrian approach from your drop-off point to each temple or parikrama entrance. A location that looks close on a map may require a longer walk when barricades are operating.

Essential festival-day habits
- Confirm your driver or e-rickshaw's return pickup point before leaving.
- Carry the hotel's name, address and contact number in writing.
- Keep cash in small denominations; do not rely on a single payment app.
- Save maps offline, but regard local police instructions as authoritative.
- For a group, agree on a rendezvous spot away from moving crowds.
- Add generous buffers between aarti, travel, meals and hotel checkout.
Travelling with elders or young children
The best route is not always the shortest. Ask about step-free approaches, resting spots and distances from the nearest vehicle drop-off. Consider skipping multiple temple transfers on the same day. A shorter visit that everyone can enjoy is better than a journey that depends on rushing through congested lanes.
Before departure
Check current Mathura district advisories and ask your lodging host about festival diversions. Do not rely on a traffic route or quoted fare published months before your visit. If you need a full Govardhan circuit, plan it separately from ordinary city sightseeing.
