How to Prepare and Hoist a Gudi at Home

A hands-on, family-oriented manual for creating, adorning, and securely showcasing a classic Gudi in your home to celebrate Gudi Padwa.

Why this guide matters

The festival is made unforgettable by participating in various activities such as raising the Gudi, listening to the panchang, sharing ritual food, creating rangoli, and including children, with these instructions emphasizing both significance and practicality.

What you need

Gather a clean bamboo or sturdy pole, a colorful cloth, neem or mango leaves, a flower garland, a sugar garland if desired, and a lightweight metal vessel to invert at the pinnacle. Make sure to have strong cotton string or a secure tie on hand.

Select items that align with your family's traditions. There is no advantage in purchasing fancy materials when simpler, reusable ones already hold significance in your household.

Step 1: prepare the space

Prepare the entrance, balcony, terrace, or window where the Gudi will be placed. Some families create a rangoli and set up a puja thali with kumkum, turmeric, flowers, rice, and a lamp nearby.

Before assembling the Gudi on a balcony, carefully plan where it will be tied to ensure safety. Improvising after the structure is complete is not a safe practice.

Step 2: dress the pole

Hang the bright cloth near the top of the bamboo like a banner, securing it tightly and adding neem or mango leaves and a flower garland around the upper part.

When using a sugar garland, position it to be visible without adding too much weight to the top.

Step 3: crown the Gudi

Position the metal container upside down on top of the pole to ensure it is stable and won't slip off. Opt for a lighter vessel to reduce the risk of accidents, especially in elevated areas or when it's windy.

Once assembled, the Gudi should appear tall and festive while still being sturdy enough to be lifted without shaking.

Step 4: raise, secure and worship

Erect the Gudi near the entrance or other noticeable location, securing it to a sturdy railing or stable support. The Gudi is typically displayed at a height where it can be easily seen.

Families can present flowers, kumkum, akshata, incense, or a lamp before conducting a brief prayer or aarti following their household customs. Be cautious with open flames around fabric, foliage, or breezy outdoor areas.

A simple child-friendly version

Kids can create a mini Gudi for tabletops using a small wooden stick, reusable cloth, paper or fabric flowers, and a lightweight cup. This is perfect for smaller spaces like apartments, classrooms, and diaspora gatherings where a full-size bamboo structure isn't feasible.

The importance of the teaching opportunity is greater than the size: involve the child in understanding and organizing each aspect.
