Build the meal around balance
A traditional Gudi Padwa celebration can be grand without causing stress. Simply select a main sweet dish, a savory comfort food, rice or bread, a dal or amti, a vegetable dish, accompaniments, and a refreshing dessert or dairy option.
This adds diversity in color, texture, and flavor without the need for an extensive restaurant menu.
Puran poli: the festive centerpiece
Puran poli is a popular Maharashtrian dish typically made during festive occasions. It consists of a soft flatbread filled with a sweet mixture of cooked chana dal, jaggery, and spices like cardamom and nutmeg.
If ghee is a staple in your kitchen, consider serving this dish warm with a dollop of it. This recipe is great for those who like to plan ahead, as the filling can be made in advance and refrigerated before putting it all together
Shrikhand and cooling sweetness
Shrikhand provides a refreshing, smooth complement to any warm dish. This thick yogurt is strained and mixed with sugar and spices like cardamom and saffron, then topped with nuts for extra flavor.
If puran poli is already part of the meal, limit the shrikhand servings. A festival thali should feel generous, not overwhelming.
Batata bhaji and the savory plate
A basic Maharashtrian potato dish is a great choice as it is comforting, versatile, and complements puri or poli. Serve with a dal, amti or usal, a seasonal vegetable, rice, papad, pickle, and koshimbir based on your family's taste preferences.
The flavorful dishes on the thali balance out the sweetness, creating a celebratory rather than overpowering experience.
A practical cooking timeline
One day prior: prep chana dal for puran, strain yogurt for shrikhand, make dry snacks, and prep garnishes. On the day of the festival: complete puran, knead dough, cook veggies, make rice and dal, and prepare puran poli shortly before serving.
Make sure to keep at least one dish intentionally uncomplicated so that the host can easily participate in the puja and family festivities.
