Dairy-free substitutions
| Traditional ingredient | Possible alternative | Vrat note |
|---|---|---|
| Ghee | Coconut oil or another accepted oil | Check family practice. |
| Milk | Coconut or nut milk | Choose an unsweetened product with simple ingredients. |
| Paneer | Tofu or a nut-based preparation | Soy is not accepted in every vrat tradition; verify your rules. |
| Yogurt | Coconut yogurt | Check thickeners and additives if your fast is strict. |
| Cream | Cashew cream | Nuts are widely used but individual traditions differ. |
Three vegan-friendly meal ideas
- Samak pulao with potato, peanuts and vegetables accepted by your fast.
- Sweet-potato and peanut chaat with coconut yogurt.
- Kuttu cheela with a potato or pumpkin filling and mint-coconut chutney.
Avoid turning substitutions into universal rules
“Vegan” and “vrat-friendly” are separate filters. A product can be vegan but not accepted in a particular family fast, and a traditional vrat food can contain dairy. Label both dimensions clearly.
