What changes in the diaspora
- Events often move to weekends because work and school calendars do not pause for the festival.
- Ingredients may need substitutions or specialist Indian grocery stores.
- Temples and cultural associations become important community hubs.
- Garba events can be extremely large in cities with strong Gujarati communities.
- Tithi-sensitive puja timings must use the local timezone, not India time.
What should not change
Diaspora adaptation is not “less authentic” simply because venue times or ingredients change. Cultural continuity often comes through language, songs, food, family teaching and community participation while practical details adapt to a new country.
