Navratri Photography Guide: Capturing Motion and Low Light

Camera settings and smartphone tips for freezing the swirling motion of Garba skirts in dark venues.

Smartphone settings and technique

  • Use the main camera rather than digital zoom in low light.
  • Lock exposure/focus on a dancer before the fastest movement.
  • For motion blur, pan with the dancer; for frozen action, use brighter areas and faster shutter where manual control exists.
  • Use burst mode selectively rather than holding it continuously.
  • Step to the edge of the dance floor; never block the moving circle for a photo.

Camera approach

On a dedicated camera, shutter speed controls whether skirts blur or freeze. A faster shutter and higher ISO can freeze action; a slower shutter with panning can show motion. Venue lighting varies too much for one universal exposure recipe.

Public events are not a license for intrusive close-ups. Be especially cautious with children, puja moments and people who are fasting or praying.
