Choosing dandiya sticks
| Factor | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Weight | light enough for repeated movement without wrist strain |
| Material | smooth wood or well-finished alternatives; avoid splinters or sharp edges |
| Length | comfortable reach without forcing wide swings |
| Grip | secure but not bulky |
| Sound | a clear strike without excessive force |
DIY decoration
- Sand or inspect the sticks so the surface is smooth.
- Wrap with narrow bandhani fabric, ribbon or gota patti, keeping the grip section comfortable.
- Secure ends with strong adhesive or neatly stitched/knotted fabric.
- Add small tassels only if they cannot catch on other dancers.
- Test for loose mirrors, bells or sharp trim before the event.
Safety over ornament
Heavy metal decorations, protruding mirrors and long tassels can turn a dance prop into a hazard. Decorations should never interfere with grip or swing path.
