Navratri 2026 · Garba and Dandiya

A Beginner's Guide to Basic Garba Steps

Step-by-step instructions for the Dodhiyu, Teen Taali, and basic circular movements.

Three beginner patterns

  1. Basic two-step: step to the side, bring the other foot in, clap with the group, and travel gradually around the circle.
  2. Teen Taali pattern: practice three claps separately before combining them with the footwork and turn.
  3. Dodhiyu introduction: learn the directional pattern slowly without spins, then add rotation only when you can stay in the lane.

How to learn safely

  • Watch one full round before entering a fast-moving circle.
  • Start on the outer edge where there is more space.
  • Keep steps small until the rhythm is automatic.
  • Do not reverse direction suddenly.
  • If you lose the pattern, step out rather than stopping in the main lane.

Practice drill at home

Use a slow 4/4 or 6/8 track, mark a circle with four floor points and practice travel without spins. Once your feet stay consistent, add claps, turns and arm styling. The goal is flow and awareness, not copying advanced performers immediately.
