Dhanteras lighting has two complementary moods: the intimate flame of a traditional diya and the convenient sparkle of electric lights. Together they can create a welcoming home without making safety an afterthought.
Choose a calm lighting arrangement
Use a few clay or metal diyas as focal points near the mandir or entrance, then add warm-white LED string lights around railings or window frames. The contrast is often more attractive than making every surface equally bright. A red-and-gold textile or marigold toran can complete the scene without additional power consumption.
Oil lamps need supervision
Place oil or ghee lamps on heat-resistant, stable bases. Do not set them beside curtains, artificial flowers, dry leaves or electrical wires. Keep children and pets at a safe distance. An unattended lamp is not a necessary part of worship.

Check modern lights too
- Use certified products intended for indoor or outdoor use as appropriate.
- Inspect plugs and wires for damage before hanging strings.
- Protect outdoor connections from rain and standing water.
- Turn lights off before sleeping or leaving the home.
A lower-energy alternative
Small rechargeable LED diyas can preserve the visual rhythm of traditional lights in buildings with strict fire rules. The festival's message is illumination and care; it does not depend on how much electricity or oil is used.
