The house-cleaning tradition before Dhanteras is more than a race to make everything sparkle. Many families describe a clean entrance and prayer area as a welcome to Goddess Lakshmi. Practically, the ritual is an opportunity to restore order before several busy festival days.

Plan by room instead of cleaning everything at once

Begin with the entrance, living area and mandir because guests and family will use them most. Move to the kitchen, pantry, bathrooms and bedrooms. Clear surfaces before wiping them, and clean from high shelves downward so dust does not land on areas already finished.

Allow enough drying time before placing electrical lights, cloth torans or fresh flowers. Never combine bleach with ammonia or acids, and ventilate when using household cleaners.

A realistic two-day schedule

Day one: sort donations, recycle packaging, dust high surfaces, wash reusable decorations and inspect lamps or extension cords. Day two: wipe the entrance, clean the mandir, sweep and mop floors, organize the cooking area and lay out the evening puja items.

In a small home, focus on safety and the spaces that will actually be used rather than attempting perfection.

Make the tradition inclusive

  • Assign children short jobs such as sorting paper or wiping a low shelf.
  • Ask family members about valuable or sacred objects before discarding anything.
  • Keep strong cleaning products away from food, pets and prayer offerings.
  • Finish heavy chores early enough to rest before puja.

A welcoming home is one where people can participate comfortably, not merely where every cupboard passes inspection.
