Dhanteras begins a sequence of festive observances in many communities, so preparing the home mandir now can make the following days calmer. A clear, thoughtful arrangement works better than an altar crowded with every decoration at once.
Start with care for existing objects
Dust framed images and clean metal murtis only using methods appropriate to their materials and finish. Delicate painted or antique objects should not be soaked or polished with household abrasives. Lay a fresh red, saffron or cream cloth over a dry surface that is safely separated from lamp flames.
Give each item a purpose
Arrange a diya or LED light, water offering, kumkum, akshat, flowers, incense if appropriate, a small bell and prasad bowls. If your family uses panchamrit for puja, prepare only a safe amount and keep perishable ingredients refrigerated until needed.

Plan a five-day rhythm
Use a labeled box or tray for supplies needed on later days, and reserve a separate section for used wicks or spent flowers. Refill fresh offerings rather than letting dairy, fruit or cut flowers remain in warm rooms.
- Place a heatproof tray under every flame.
- Keep cords hidden away from water vessels and feet.
- Avoid overloading extension boards with decorative lights.
- Create enough room for family members to sit or stand comfortably.
The most important design choice
Leave a quiet area for prayer. A mandir feels welcoming when it is clean, safe and meaningful to the household, even if it occupies only a single shelf.
