The Significance of Akhand Jyot (The Eternal Flame)

Rules for lighting the oil lamp, maintaining it continuously for 9 days, and safety precautions.

What Akhand Jyot means

Akhand Jyot is a continuously maintained sacred flame kept through the festival in some households. It symbolizes sustained devotion and divine light. Because it is an open flame, the ritual requires real-world fire-safety planning rather than romanticizing unattended lamps.

Safety checklist

  • Use a stable metal or heat-safe lamp on a nonflammable tray.
  • Keep curtains, paper decor, loose dupattas and flowers away from the flame.
  • Do not place it where pets or children can reach it.
  • Ensure a responsible adult is present when required by your household setup.
  • Keep suitable fire-safety equipment accessible.
  • If continuous flame cannot be maintained safely, follow a safer family/temple alternative rather than creating a hazard.
