Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana): Step-by-Step Guide

The exact method for placing the pot, coconuts, and mango leaves on Day 1 to invoke the Goddess.

2026 date note: Standard 2026 Shardiya Navratri calendars list Day 1 on October 11, Maha Navami on October 19 and Vijayadashami on October 20. Tithi-sensitive clock times vary by location, so check a local panchang for exact muhurat times in your city. Reference calendar.

General Ghatasthapana sequence

  1. Clean and prepare the puja area.
  2. Prepare a stable base or shallow vessel with clean soil/grain if your family uses it for barley sowing.
  3. Place the kalash according to family practice, often with water and customary items.
  4. Arrange mango leaves or another locally used leaf where appropriate, and place a coconut as your tradition directs.
  5. Light the lamp and begin invocation/prayer.
  6. Maintain the setup respectfully through the festival and conclude it according to family tradition.

Timing must be local

Ghatasthapana is tithi-sensitive. A muhurat calculated for one city does not apply in another, so use a time calculated for your own city and timezone.

Practical safety

Use a flat, nonflammable surface and keep lamps away from cloth, curtains, pets and children. A ritual setup should be stable enough to remain undisturbed for the planned period.
