Visarjan: How to Respectfully Conclude the Navratri Puja

The steps for moving the Kalash, immersing the Khetri, and breaking the fast on Vijayadashami.

Closing the home observance

  1. Complete the final puja or prayer according to family practice.
  2. Offer gratitude and distribute remaining prasad appropriately.
  3. If you maintained a kalash, khetri or special altar arrangement, dismantle it respectfully rather than discarding everything as trash.
  4. Handle water, soil, flowers and organic materials in an environmentally responsible way where local tradition permits.
  5. Break the fast gently if you have been fasting.
  6. Carry the festival forward through a concrete act of learning, service or renewed commitment.

Visarjan can be symbolic at home

Not every home tradition involves immersing a large idol. Where immersion is practiced, local environmental rules matter. Small clay or symbolic home observances can reduce waste and water pollution.
