In Assam the nine nights of Navratri build up to Durga Puja. In the last days, the Goddess is welcomed into the mondop with the beat of the dhak, families go out in new clothes to see the pandals, and on Maha Ashtami morning people offer anjali, flowers given to the Goddess with folded hands. Puja evenings bring dhunuchi dances, bhog and cultural programmes, and on Bijoya Dashami the Goddess is taken to the river, after which everyone exchanges "Shubho Bijoya": a pranam for the elders, a hug and sweets for friends, and love for the children.
One of the most revered Shakti Peethas. Its Durga Puja is kept over about a fortnight, beginning before Mahalaya, and draws devotees from across the North-East.
From Shashthi to Dashami, towns across Assam fill with pandals, the sound of the dhak and families going from mondop to mondop in new clothes.
On Bijoya Dashami the Goddess is taken in procession to the river for immersion, and families exchange "Shubho Bijoya", touching their elders' feet.
In the same weeks of autumn, Assam keeps Kati Bihu: earthen lamps are lit at the tulsi plant, at the granary and in the paddy fields.

Navratri dates follow Drik Panchang for India. Assamese and Bengali panjikas sometimes place the Puja days, Navami and Bijoya Dashami a day apart from north-Indian calendars, so check your local panjika or puja committee for your town. For the nine forms of Durga, see Navadurga.
Say "নৱৰাত্ৰিৰ আন্তৰিক শুভেচ্ছা" (Nowaratrir antorik xubhessa), heartfelt Navratri wishes, or simply "শুভ নৱৰাত্ৰি" (Xubho Nowaratri). For Durga Puja, say "দুৰ্গা পূজাৰ শুভেচ্ছা" (Durga pujar xubhessa).
Assamese pronounces শ, ষ and স as a breathy sound close to "kh", and many Assamese speakers write it as x in English letters: xubhessa, Xoroswoti, Oxom. The English-letter version of each wish follows this everyday spelling, so it reads the way it sounds.
Assamese and Bengali share a script, but Assamese has its own letters ৰ (ra) and ৱ (wa), as in নৱৰাত্ৰি. Use an Assamese keyboard or copy the wishes from this page to keep the spelling right.
At the Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, one of the great Shakti Peethas, Durga Puja is kept over about a fortnight rather than five days, beginning before Mahalaya. Wishes 4 and 22 on this page name Kamakhya Ai.
আপুনি (apuni) and আপোনাৰ (apunar) are the respectful you and your, for elders, in-laws and teachers. তুমি (tumi) and তোমাৰ (tumar) are familiar, for friends and younger family. Wishes 23 and 24 use the familiar form; the rest are respectful.
The nine days of Navratri 2026 run from Sunday 11 October to Monday 19 October, and Bijoya Dashami (Dussehra) is on Tuesday 20 October. The main days of Durga Puja, Shashthi to Navami, fall in the last days of Navratri; check your local panjika for the exact days in your town.
Tap WhatsApp under any wish. It opens WhatsApp with the Assamese text and a link to it already typed, so you only have to pick the chat. Copy Roman copies the English-letter version instead, and on a phone, Share opens your phone's share sheet.
