In Karnataka, Navaratri is Dasara, and Mysuru Dasara is the state's Nada Habba, the festival of the land. At home, families set up the bombe, dolls arranged on steps around the pattada gombe, the bride and groom pair, and neighbours come each evening to see them and leave with arishina-kumkuma. In the last days, books are placed before Sharade for Saraswati Puje, and on Mahanavami tools, machines and vehicles are washed and worshipped for Ayudha Puje. On Vijayadashami the Jamboo Savari winds through Mysuru, children begin their first letters, and people exchange banni leaves as gold and touch their elders' feet.
Karnataka's Nada Habba: the palace is lit every evening of Dasara, and on Vijayadashami the Goddess Chamundeshwari is carried through the city in a golden howdah on an elephant.
The temple of the goddess who slew Mahishasura, above the city. Mysuru Dasara is inaugurated here, and devotees climb the thousand steps through Navaratri.
Sharadamba, Saraswati, is dressed in a different alankara each day of Sharannavaratri at the Sringeri math, with special worship through the nine days.
On the coast, Mangaluru Dasara ends with a procession of the goddess Sharada from Kudroli, while troupes of huli vesha tiger dancers fill the streets of Udupi and Mangaluru.
Setting up a doll display? The golu guide covers steps, doll placement and themes, and works for Bombe Habba too.

Say "ನವರಾತ್ರಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಹಾರ್ದಿಕ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು" (Navaratri habbada hardika shubhashayagalu), heartfelt Navaratri festival wishes, or simply "ಶುಭ ನವರಾತ್ರಿ" (Shubha Navaratri). For Dasara, "ನಾಡಹಬ್ಬ ದಸರಾದ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು".
Nada Habba means "festival of the land". Mysuru Dasara is Karnataka's state festival: it is inaugurated at the Chamundeshwari Temple on Chamundi Hills, Mysuru Palace is lit every evening, and on Vijayadashami the Jamboo Savari procession carries the Goddess through the city on an elephant.
Bombe Habba, the doll festival, is Karnataka's Navaratri display of dolls on steps, like golu in Tamil Nadu. At its heart is the pattada gombe, a pair of bride and groom dolls often passed from mother to daughter. Neighbours are invited to see the dolls, and women guests are given arishina-kumkuma.
On Vijayadashami, people in Karnataka worship the banni (shami) tree and give its leaves to elders and friends as "gold", saying "ಬನ್ನಿ ತಗೊಂಡು ಬಂಗಾರದ ಹಾಗೆ ಇರೋಣ": let's take banni and stay like gold. Younger people touch elders' feet as they give the leaves. Wish 15 on this page uses the saying.
ನೀವು (neevu) and ನಿಮ್ಮ (nimma) are the respectful you and your, for elders, in-laws, teachers and anyone you are not close to. ನೀನು (neenu) and ನಿನ್ನ (ninna) are familiar, for close friends and younger family. Wishes 23 and 24 use the familiar form; the rest are respectful.
Sharad Navaratri 2026 begins on Sunday 11 October; the Ghatasthapana muhurat in New Delhi is 6:19 to 10:12 AM. Mahanavami, with Ayudha Puje, falls on Monday 19 October in India, and Vijayadashami, with the Jamboo Savari, on Tuesday 20 October. Check your local panchanga for your city.
