In Bhojpuri-speaking homes of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, Navratri begins with kalash sthapana: a kalash is installed, जौ (barley) is sown beside it and a lamp is kept burning for the nine days. Women sing devi geet and pachra, the old Bhojpuri songs to the goddess, families hold night-long jagratas, and young girls are worshipped and fed on Ashtami or Navami. From Saptami the towns fill with Durga Puja pandals, and the nine nights end with Ravan Vadh on Dussehra. A wish in Bhojpuri carries that whole world with it, which is why it means more than a forwarded line in Hindi.
One of the best-known goddess temples of the Bhojpuri belt. During Navratri it draws crowds from across north Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The hill shrine of the goddess on the Ganga, near Mirzapur. Navratri brings its biggest fair of the year, with pilgrims doing the circuit of the three goddess temples.
Bari and Choti Patan Devi in old Patna are revered Shakti shrines and are among the busiest places in the city through the nine nights.
Durga Puja pandals fill the towns from Saptami, and on Dussehra crowds gather at Patna's Gandhi Maidan and town grounds across the region for Ravan Vadh.

Times are for New Delhi (Drik Panchang); Patna and Varanasi are a little earlier. In the USA, UK and Canada, Durga Ashtami is on Sunday 18 October. For your city, see the Navratri 2026 guide. After Navratri, the region's next big festival is Chhath Puja.
Say "शुभ नवरातर" (Shubh Navratar) or "नवरातर के ढेरो शुभकामना" (Navratar ke dhero shubhkamna, lots of Navratri wishes). For a group, "रउवा सभे के नवरातर के बहुत-बहुत बधाई" means many, many Navratri greetings to you all.
रउवा (rauwa) and राउर (raur) are the respectful you and your, like Hindi aap and aapka. तू (tu) and तोहार (tohar) are familiar, for close friends and people younger than you. All 26 wishes on this page use the respectful form, so they suit elders. For a friend, swap राउर for तोहार: "माई भवानी तोहार हर मनोकामना पूरा करस".
Bhojpuri is spoken across western Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, in parts of Jharkhand and in Nepal's Terai. It is also the heritage language of many families in Mauritius, Suriname, Fiji, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. It is written in Devanagari.
Bhojpuri spelling is not standardised, so the same word is written several ways: रउवा or रउआ, नवरातर or नवरात्र, किरपा or कृपा. Both forms on this page are correct; use the one your family uses.
Sharad Navratri 2026 begins with kalash sthapana on Sunday 11 October; the muhurat in New Delhi is 6:19 to 10:12 AM. Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami fall on Monday 19 October in India, and Dussehra (Vijayadashami) is on Tuesday 20 October.
