In Haryana, the nine nights are the naurate. On the first morning a kalash is set up and खेतरी, barley, is sown beside it in a clay pot to sprout over the nine days. In many villages girls make सांझी on the wall of the house and sing to her every evening. Families fast, keep a jot burning, hold jagratas, and on Ashtami or Navami wash the feet of the kanjaks, the young girls of the neighbourhood, and feed them halwa, puri and chana. The festival ends with Dussehra, when Sanjhi is taken to the pond and Ravan burns on the village ground.
The best-known goddess shrine in Haryana. Its Navratra mela fills the hillside with lakhs of devotees through the nine days.
Revered as a Shakti Peetha, the Bhadrakali temple in Kurukshetra draws crowds of devotees during Navratri.
The old Sheetla Mata temple is busy in both Navratris, with its biggest fair in the month of Chaitra.
Girls and women shape Sanjhi Mata from clay and dung on the wall, decorate her through Navratri and immerse her on Dussehra.

Say "नौरत्यां की घणी-घणी बधाई" (Nauratyan ki ghani-ghani badhai, many many Navratri greetings), "शुभ नौरते" (Shubh Naurate) or, the Haryana way, "नौरत्यां की राम-राम" (Ram-Ram for Navratri).
थारा (thara) goes with थम/तम, the respectful you, and is right for elders and for wishing a family. तेरा (tera) goes with तू and is casual, for close friends and younger cousins. Wishes 24 and 25 on this page use the casual form; the rest are respectful.
Sanjhi is a Navratri folk tradition of Haryana. Girls and women make an image of the goddess on the wall of the house with clay and dung, decorate it with stars, the sun and the moon, sing Sanjhi songs each evening, and immerse it on Dussehra.
Khetri is the barley sown in a clay pot or a patch of soil on the first day of Navratri, next to the kalash. It sprouts over the nine days, and the green shoots are taken as a blessing at the end of the festival.
Haryanvi, also called Bangru, is spoken across Haryana and in the villages around Delhi, with related speech in neighbouring parts of western Uttar Pradesh. It is written in Devanagari, and spellings vary from district to district.
Sharad Navratri 2026 begins with Ghatasthapana on Sunday 11 October; the muhurat in New Delhi is 6:19 to 10:12 AM. Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami fall on Monday 19 October in India, and Dussehra (Vijayadashami) is on Tuesday 20 October.
