In Punjabi homes, the narate begin with a jot lit before Mata Rani and ਖੇਤਰੀ, barley, sown in a clay pot to sprout over the nine days. Many families fast, hold a Mata di chaunki or an all-night jagrata where bhetan are sung and jaikaras called out, and visit the goddess temples of their city. On Ashtami or Navami the kanjaks, the young girls of the neighbourhood, are welcomed, their feet washed, a red thread tied on their wrists, and they are fed halwa, puri and kale chhole. The nine days end with Dussehra and the Ravan Dahan grounds of every town.
During Navratri, children dressed as langurs, Hanuman's army, come to the Bada Hanuman Mandir at Durgiana to fulfil family vows. The mela ends on Dussehra.
The Kali Devi temple facing the Baradari gardens, built under Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, is the city's busiest shrine through the nine days.
Revered as a Shakti Peetha, with its temple beside a sacred tank, Devi Talab draws devotees from across Doaba during Navratri.
Many Punjabi families make a yatra to the goddess shrines in the Himachal hills, and to Vaishno Devi, during or right after Navratri.

Say "ਨਰਾਤਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੱਖ-ਲੱਖ ਵਧਾਈਆਂ" (Naratiyan diyan lakh-lakh vadhaiyan, a hundred thousand Navratri congratulations), "ਸ਼ੁਭ ਨਰਾਤੇ" (Shubh Narate) or "ਨਰਾਤੇ ਮੁਬਾਰਕ" (Narate mubarak).
