In Tamil homes Navarathri means golu. On or just before the first day, the dolls come out of storage and are arranged on steps, with the kalasam and the gods at the top. The nine nights are shared among the three goddesses: the first three for Durga, the next three for Lakshmi and the last three for Saraswati. Every evening neighbours drop in, songs are sung before the golu, sundal is served, and women guests leave with thamboolam. On Navami books and instruments are placed before Saraswati and tools before the Goddess for Ayudha Pooja, and on Vijayadasami children write their first letters and one doll is laid down to mark the end of the golu.
Through Navarathri the Goddess Meenakshi is dressed in a different alankaram each evening, and the temple keeps a golu of its own.
Tens of thousands of devotees keep vows by dressing as gods, demons and animals and collecting alms, until Mahishasura is slain on the seashore on Vijayadasami.
In the weeks before Navarathri, the streets around the Kapaleeshwarar Temple fill with stalls of clay and papier-mache golu dolls.
Families arrange dolls on an odd number of steps, invite neighbours each evening, sing, serve sundal and send women guests home with thamboolam.

Dates follow Drik Panchang for India. Tamil panchangams sometimes place Saraswathi and Ayudha Pooja differently when Navami spans two days, so check yours. For the day-by-day goddesses, see Navadurga, and for your city's timings the Navratri 2026 guide.
Say "இனிய நவராத்திரி நல்வாழ்த்துகள்" (Iniya Navarathri nalvazhthukkal), happy Navarathri wishes. For a short greeting, "இனிய நவராத்திரி!" (Iniya Navarathri!) is enough.
Golu (கொலு, bommai kolu) is the Navarathri display of dolls on steps, usually an odd number such as five, seven or nine, with gods and goddesses at the top and scenes of everyday life lower down. Families invite friends to see it each evening, sing, serve sundal and give thamboolam to women guests.
Say "எங்கள் வீட்டுக் கொலுவுக்கு உங்களை அன்புடன் அழைக்கிறோம்" (Engal veettu koluvukku ungalai anbudan azhaikkirom), we lovingly invite you to the golu at our home. Add the date, time and address. Wish 8 on this page is a ready-made invitation.
On Navami, the ninth day, Tamil homes worship Saraswati by placing books, notebooks and musical instruments before her, and keep Ayudha Pooja by cleaning and worshipping tools, machines and vehicles. The next day, Vijayadasami, the books are taken back for study and children begin their first letters at Vidyarambham.
உங்கள் (ungal) and நீங்கள் (neengal) are the respectful your and you, for elders, in-laws, teachers and anyone you are not close to. உன் (un) and நீ (nee) are familiar, for close friends and younger family. Wishes 23 and 24 use the familiar form; the rest are respectful.
Sharad Navarathri 2026 begins on Sunday 11 October; the Ghatasthapana muhurat in New Delhi is 6:19 to 10:12 AM. Navami, with Saraswathi Pooja and Ayudha Pooja, falls on Monday 19 October in India, and Vijayadasami on Tuesday 20 October. Check your local panchangam for your city.
