Prepare a simple devotional space
Clean a stable altar or shelf, place an image or symbol used in your household worship, and keep water and prasad nearby. Many families honor Shiva and the Ganga; others include Vishnu or the deities traditionally worshipped at home. Set clay diyas on a fireproof tray so oil does not reach wood, cloth, or wiring. Eleven or twenty-one lamps are popular suggested counts in some homes, not a universal obligation.

A modest evening sequence
Begin with a short prayer or meditation as evening falls. Light the lamps carefully, read or tell the story of Shiva and Tripura, and offer aarti according to family custom. Share a small homemade sweet or fruit, then spend a few minutes reflecting on what light means to the household. A donation of food or supplies to a credible local charity can extend the observance beyond the room.
Home-celebration checklist
- Check the Kartik Purnima date and local sunset for your city.
- Keep flames away from curtains, children, pets, and electrical decorations.
- Use a bowl of water only as a symbolic representation; no river is required.
- Extinguish and cool every lamp fully before clearing the altar.
Common question
Is a big puja arrangement necessary? No. Family traditions differ, but mindful prayer and one safely lit lamp can be a meaningful celebration.
