Panchamrit: a small fresh batch
Combine about 4 tablespoons milk, 2 tablespoons plain yogurt, 1 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon ghee, and 1 teaspoon sugar in a clean bowl. Mix shortly before worship, using pasteurized dairy and a freshly washed spoon. This is one household proportion, not a universal liturgical rule. Do not give honey to infants younger than one year. Refrigerate immediately if you are not offering or serving the mixture straightaway.

Kheer and roasted panjiri
For an easy rice kheer, gently simmer ¼ cup rinsed rice in about 3 cups milk, stirring until the grains soften; sweeten to taste and add cardamom. For panjiri, slowly roast ½ cup wheat flour in 2 tablespoons ghee until fragrant, cool slightly, then stir in sugar and chopped nuts if suitable. Avoid over-roasting and label nut-containing servings for guests with allergies. Use separate clean vessels for ritual portions.
Serving safely
- Prepare small quantities that can be consumed promptly after aarti.
- Keep milk-based offerings chilled until needed and do not leave them out for hours.
- Provide a clearly labeled nut-free alternative where possible.
- Use reusable or compostable serving dishes and avoid waste near waterways.
Common question
Must every family offer all three preparations? No. Customs vary. Fruit, a little kheer, or another familiar homemade offering can be sufficient within your household tradition.
